As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra
Trams and Public Transport Victoria are renewing tram tracks on
Victoria Parade, between Gisborne Street and Brunswick Street, East
The curved tram tracks within the work-zone are 15 years old and
need renewing. The renewed tracks will deliver a better road
surface for cyclists and tram passengers, produce less tram noise
due to broken rails and wheel squealing.
The preliminary work will commence on Monday 5 June 2017 between
the first and last trams, and if required continue for several
nights. This will involve pre-welding track and overhead work.
Major work will occur on Victoria Parade between Brunswick and
Gisborne Streets in East Melbourne and Brunswick Street at the
intersection of Victoria Parade. Work will take place from 12:01am
Saturday 10 June and continue 24 hours a day until 5:00am Tuesday
13 June 2017.
Route 11, 12 and
109 tram services will be affected
Both bus services will divert around the work zone.
For more details refer to service update
Routes 11, 12, 48 & 109 - Tram improvement work - Saturday 10
to Monday 12 June.
Several road closures will be in place from 12:01 am on Thursday
8 June until 5 am on Tuesday 13 June 2017:
Detours will be in place for the duration of the works. Traffic
controllers will direct traffic and help facilitate local access
The work zone will be fenced off for safety, however, footpaths
will remain open to allow pedestrian access to all businesses
located around the work zone.
Associated noise and dust from machinery, vehicles and work
crews is unavoidable, but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep
this to a minimum. The noisiest work will occur between 6 am and 10
pm, however, there will be a need to conduct noisy work outside
these hours to ensure that the work is completed by 5 am on Tuesday
13 June 2017.
We advise that this work is being performed in accordance with
our obligations to Public Transport Victoria and is necessary to
maintain a safe tram network as required by the Rail Safety Act
