An integrated approach to managing the entire tram network

The Yarra Trams Operations Centre has technology that enables us to better respond to day-to-day operational planning, decision making, incident management and customer needs. It incorporates global best practice in a modern design.

Real-time updates

  • The locations of all trams are pinpointed on a map of the network which is updated every 10 seconds
  • The OC has 12 consoles, six of which are allocated to fleet controllers. It is staffed 24 hours a day
  • The controllers have two-way communication access to trams at all times
  • The OC transmits customer information to the tram network
  • The OC directs response crews to incidents on the tram network
  • Information about service disruptions is fed to our tramTRACKERâ„¢ system
  • Passenger Information Officers provide live and recorded announcements to be played on trams and post disruptions to our Twitter account.

Tram fleet monitoring

  • The Automatic Vehicle Monitoring (AVM) system enables our controllers to pinpoint the location of every tram on our network
  • The system provides data and voice communication
  • Timing points along each tram route provide data to the AVM computer to determine schedule adherence
  • The AVM data enables performance monitoring and reporting as well as service planning

Major events management

  • Traffic and transport management for events such as the Australian Formula One Grand Prix and the Australian Open Tennis are coordinated from a special events room overlooking the Fleet Operations Centre
  • This room is used by Victoria Police and VicRoads as well as other external agencies to coordinate traffic and public transport for major events
